Our Story

Arbit Center for Mental Health

Meet our director,

Ruthie Arbit, LICSW, MA

Arbit Center for Mental Health began in 2016 as a solo private practice founded by Ruthie Arbit, LICSW, MA, with a vision of creating a space where exceptional care and meaningful community impact could exist side by side. What started in a single office in Washington, DC has grown into a collaborative, multi location practice serving individuals and families across the DMV and beyond, now home to both the Arbit Center for Mental Health and The Arbit ADHD Center.

Ruthie Arbit, our founder and director, is a pediatric, perinatal, and infant mental health specialist with nearly fifteen years of experience supporting children, parents, and families. Her work as a clinician, educator, and advocate reflects her dedication to evidence based care, social justice, and supporting families through every stage of life.

What Our Patients Say

  • “As a first time mom, I struggled to balance this new role with the shifting dynamics of my marriage.

Ruthie helped to normalize these issues and come up with helpful strategies and suggestions to navigate this uncharted territory.

She is an excellent listener, and consistently ensured that my concerns - big and small - were validated and addressed.”

    — Jill (Birth Circle And Moms Group Participant)

  • “She combines empathy and professional knowledge with a delightful candor.

She clearly understands the full spectrum of human experiences and behavior, particularly the conflicting emotions affecting women and mothers after giving birth: the struggle to understand how family dynamics change, the disorienting mix of happiness, sadness, and overwhelm.

Ruthie appreciates how and why certain life changes can temporarily unmoor us, and understands the value of talking through the next steps in an open, constructive way.”

    — Elizabeth S. (Moms Group Participant)

  • “She meets the entire family without judgement and helps them grow together towards a place of health and happiness.

She is a resource and partner that no D.C. family should overlook!”

    — Michelle Visser (Psychotherapist, Colleague, Advanced Training Participant)

  • “She is down to earth, passionate, and genuine in her approach.

Not to mention, super knowledgeable in treating this population. The information presented and materials to use are excellent, and she said we would be able to apply what we learned in our next session and she was right.

Highly recommend this course!”

    — Kaitlynne

  • “She is a great teacher and exceeded my expectations of her class/training about Postpartum Depression.

She is a force to be reckon with, yet she is so humble and relatable. Thanks Ruthie look forward to participating in more of your future classes.”
